about

"Lunar Afternoon," the first Mambo-X single, captures our earliest attempt at wrapping afro-poppy dance grooves around Erin's voice.

It was backed with "Too Much Thought," a song with an almost chamber-pop feel to it and a wacky, jazzy break. Looking back, it feels like an odd choice to release. It's hard to remember why we chose it. Perhaps we figured we'd never put it on an album, so...

None of us had ever been in a 16-track studio before, except for our bassist Mark Wilken, who had played with legendary Albany rockers, The A.D.s. We were very impressed with engineer Mark Ernst's ears and studio chops, and the recording itself. His epic rants, not so much! He also played us a bunch of Blotto out-takes, including a great parody of J.J. Cale's "Cocaine." It was called "Spokane," and should have been a regional hit in Washington State.

about

Mambo-X Albany, New York

Powered by the twirling stage theatrics of singer Erin O'Hara and the interweaving guitars of Seth Kaufman and Mitch Rosen, alterna-dance band Mambo-X was one of Albany NY's most popular acts.

After gigging extensively on the East Coast and releasing a single, a flexi-disc and the EP Machines of Eden, the band recorded Whirled in 1988 with producer Mitch Easter and then promptly imploded.
