about

In April of 1987, Mambo-X recorded a seven-song EP called Machines of Eden at Cotton Hill Studios in Albany. The record was only released on vinyl. It got a bunch of nice reviews, helped the band land gigs up and down the East Coast and sold about 2000 copies.
In late 2018, Mitch Rosen, one of the founding Mambos, decided it would be cool to remix the EP and release a digital version of Machines of Eden. He tracked down Ace Parkhurst, the engineer and owner at Cotton Hiill.
Ace not only had the original tracks, but he also had the track sheets that log which instrument is on what track. Without the track sheets, mixing can turn into a baffling exercise in sonic archeology.
But 16-track Ampex audio tape—which is what Machines was recorded on—doesn't age very well. In order to restore the tape to playable condition, it has to be baked.
Like, literally. In an oven.
At varying temperatures, for varying lengths of time.
So the tapes got the heat treatment at Cathedral Sound in Rensselaer, NY, were converted to digital files and then shipped to Mitch.
"Crazy Women in Houses," the first song Mitch has mixed, features striking lyrics by Erin O'Hara that conjure up a proto-riot grrrl cautionary tale about motherhood in America.
"I didn't add any effects, other than delay, reverb, and compression," says Mitch about the mix. He swears no autotune was used in the proceedings.
"I was impressed by the musicianship," Mitch said when asked what, besides his own perseverance, impressed him about the song.
"At the time, I was paying attention to writing songs, or just playing my parts as well as I could," says Mitch, "After listening to the song 100 times, you really get a sense of exactly what everyone is doing, and just how nuanced and precise the playing is."

about

Mambo-X Albany, New York

Powered by the twirling stage theatrics of singer Erin O'Hara and the interweaving guitars of Seth Kaufman and Mitch Rosen, alterna-dance band Mambo-X was one of Albany NY's most popular acts.

After gigging extensively on the East Coast and releasing a single, a flexi-disc and the EP Machines of Eden, the band recorded Whirled in 1988 with producer Mitch Easter and then promptly imploded.
